Summer League Spirit Winners

GRU Honors Mark Piper with a Lifetime Spirit Award

Starting this summer, a yearly lifetime spirit winner will be chosen. In this our inaugural season with this honor, we have chosen Mark Piper to receive this acclaim. GRU Lifetime Spirit Award winners are asked to choose a charitable organization to receive a donation from GRU in the names of each individual spirit award winners for the year (Summer '15 through Spring '16). With this honor, Mark designated the charitable organization Community Food Share of Boulder and Broomfield Counties. Next summer we will honor another member of the GRU community with a lifetime spirit award to someone that exhibits their own excellent spirit.

A little bit about our friend and GRU community member: Mark Piper. Piper (as he is known) was first exposed to Ultimate while watching College Nationals in Madison Wisconsin. After moving to Boulder he began playing pickup and soon after signed up for GRU's 1996 spring league. In the following years Piper played organized Ultimate with college and club teams. This year Piper helped to organize Bighorn a Grandmasters team that finished 6th at the 2015 National Championships. Piper has a giant heart and pure love of the game, bringing is engaging smile every time he steps on the field. Here is what Piper has to say about GRU and his charity selection: "What keeps me coming back to GRU is not only the ultimate--which is good--but also the people. I met my wife and most of my friends through GRU, and I love it that every season, without fail, I meet new people that I enjoy. For a charity, I'd like to select Community Food Share of Boulder and Broomfield Counties. We live in such a great place, so it's sad that there are still many people who need assistance. Food banks like Community Food Share are an effective way to help."

Thank you Piper for being an amazing member of our community. If you don't know Piper already take a moment to seek him out next time you see him on the fields.

Here is a photo of Piper then (in 1998 with his Mamabird and Kali teammates) and now.
